Netflix’s new series Dabba Cartel, directed by Hitesh Bhatia and produced by Farhan Akhtar, is a unique crime thriller. It tells the story of five middle-class women whose small food delivery business unexpectedly turns into a drug cartel. Featuring a stellar cast including Shabana Azmi, Jyotika, Shalini Pandey, Nimisha Sajayan, and Gajraj Rao, the show highlights women’s resilience and unity in a male-dominated world.

A Unique Take on Female Solidarity

The story revolves around five women from Thane who run a simple lunchbox service. However, their business takes an unexpected turn when they get involved in drug trafficking. These women, despite their different backgrounds, support and uplift each other. The show beautifully portrays their bond, making it relatable for women of all ages. Shabana Azmi plays Sheila, the eldest of the group, who refuses to let go of her newfound success. Jyotika, as Varuna, struggles with her insecure husband Shankar, played by Jisshu Sengupta.

Crime, Power, and Greed

As the women earn more money, their lives become more complicated. Government officer Ajit (Gajraj Rao) and police inspector Preeti (Sai Tamhankar) begin investigating the illegal drug trade. The story dives into the dark reality of crime, showing how difficult it is to escape once involved. Nimisha Sajayan shines in her role as Mala, a maid who dreams of a better life for her daughter. Her character’s desires are simple—education, a home, and a big TV—but achieving them comes at a heavy cost.

Impressive Performances and Strong Writing

The series is gripping from start to finish. The writing by Vishnu Menon is engaging, though some twists feel predictable. Shabana Azmi’s character could have had more suspense, but her performance remains powerful. The male characters, especially Jisshu Sengupta’s Shankar, bring an interesting layer to the story. He is not a typical villain but a man threatened by his wife’s potential. His toxic masculinity adds to the tension in the story.

A Must-Watch Thriller

Despite minor flaws, Dabba Cartel is a refreshing watch. The seven-episode series keeps viewers hooked with its mix of crime, drama, and emotional depth. The realistic storytelling and strong performances make it a must-watch. Whether you binge-watch it or take your time, don’t miss this thrilling tale of women who challenge the odds and take control of their lives.
