Revisiting Kya Yehi Pyar Hai (2002) – A Different Take on Love

4 Min Read

The 2002 film Kya Yehi Pyar Hai, starring Ameesha Patel, Aftab Shivdasani, and Jackie Shroff, was not just another Bollywood love story. Unlike typical romantic films of that era, it questioned the obsession with one-sided love.

A Love Story with a Twist

Aftab Shivdasani plays Rahul, a young man hopelessly in love with Sandhya (Ameesha Patel). For four long years, he chases her relentlessly, hoping she will eventually fall for him. Finally, in a dramatic moment near the seaside, she accepts his love. However, the film takes an unexpected turn when Rahul realizes that love is not everything in life.

This was a bold statement for Bollywood at the time. Most love stories glorified the idea of doing anything for love, but this film suggested that chasing love blindly could be a waste of time.

Efforts to Break the Usual Bollywood Romance

The film’s screenwriter Javed Siddique and director K. Murli Mohan Rao attempted to bring freshness to the teenage love story genre. They tried to move away from clichés and offer something meaningful.

However, in many ways, Kya Yehi Pyar Hai still followed the standard Bollywood formula. The settings, college scenes, dance sequences, and even the hero’s friend group looked similar to other romantic films of the time.

A Musical Win

One of the film’s strongest points was its music by Sajid-Wajid. The songs were catchy, emotional, and memorable. They helped move the story forward and kept the audience engaged even when the plot felt repetitive.

Ameesha Patel’s Ice-Cold Performance

Ameesha Patel’s character was meant to be distant and uninterested, and she played it exactly that way. However, at times, her performance seemed almost too emotionless, making it hard to tell whether she was acting or just bored.

Her styling also felt out of place. While she was supposed to be a simple, studious girl, her heavy makeup and lip gloss told a different story. The film even tried to add glamour by dressing her in beachwear during song sequences, which felt forced and unnecessary.

Supporting Cast and Performances

  • Jackie Shroff, as Aftab’s elder brother, delivered a strong and emotional performance. His role added depth to the film.
  • Anupama Verma played a bold college girl who tries to bring the two leads together. She had some sharp dialogues, including one where she questions why Sandhya won’t marry someone who truly loves her.
  • Ashish Vidyarthi, as Ameesha’s father, played a violent and controlling parent. However, his performance felt over-the-top.

A Film with a Message

Despite its flaws, Kya Yehi Pyar Hai attempted to teach an important lesson. It challenged the idea that love should be the only focus in life. As Jackie Shroff’s character wisely says,
“Love is not the heart of life; it’s part of life.”

Aftab Shivdasani later reflected on the film, saying,
“It had a deep message and wonderful music that is still relevant today.”

Though not a blockbuster, Kya Yehi Pyar Hai remains a unique love story that dared to question Bollywood’s obsession with romantic sacrifice.
