Shahrukh Khan had a very close relationship with his mother Latif Fatima Khan. Their relationship was so deep that when he lost her in 1990, he stopped praying. Reflecting on this in an interview with Reader’s Digest in 2005, he revealed, ‘I was very angry at God for a while, but then I realized that if I stayed angry at God there was no chance that I will never be able to meet my mother again. If you are not compatible with God, there is neither heaven nor hell.’ Very few people would know that his mother’s name is in the children’s ward of Mumbai’s famous Nanavati Hospital. Shahrukh Khan shared in the same interview that when he reached the hospital to meet the child of one of his colleagues, he saw the poor conditions there due to lack of money.
Upon learning of this, he donated some money, prompting the hospital authorities to honor his mother by naming the ward after her. He expressed his desire to become involved in further charitable efforts. Shahrukh currently oversees the Meer Foundation, named after his father, which works to empower women and assist acid attack survivors. The foundation provides facilities like medical assistance, accommodation and training to facilitate their recovery and empowerment.
