After the tremendous success of ‘Scam 1992’ and ‘Scam 2003’, now veteran director Hansal Mehta is ready with the third season of the series. This time he has brought the story of Subrata Roy to the world of OTT. On Thursday, he has announced the new season of ‘Scam’ ‘Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga’. Hansal Mehta shared a titular teaser and wrote, ‘Sc3m is back! Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga, coming soon on Sony Liv. Interestingly, Hansal Mehta himself is going to direct this season. Subrata Roy is one of those personalities of the country, who can be called the most famous businessman of India in the 90s. He was the founder of Sahara Group. This was the period when Sahara’s business extended from chit funds to airplanes and from sponsorship of Team India to news media. However, Subrata Roy, popularly known as Sahara Shree, suffered a major setback when he was arrested for defrauding investors.

Where did the poor people’s Rs 10 thousand crore go?

In 2014, Subrata Roy was put in jail for not paying the dues of Rs 10,000 crore. He remained in jail for more than two years and came out on parole in 2016. However, after this he had to go to jail again, because the regulatory body SEBI had demanded from the Supreme Court to cancel the parole. Last year in November 2023, Subrata Roy died at the age of 75 due to cardiorespiratory arrest.

This will be the third season of the very popular ‘Scam Franchise’ in the world of OTT. Harshad Mehta’s story was shown in the first season ‘Scam 1992’. In the year 2020, it was the biggest hit series of that year. Prateek Gandhi played the lead role in this. This character made Prateek a star overnight. The story of the stamp paper scam was shown in the second season of the series. The series ‘Scam 2003’ is based on the story by Abdul Karim Telgi, directed by Jai Mehta.

Who was Subrata Roy? What is the story of Sahara Shree?

Subrata Roy, born on 10 June 1948 in Araria district of Bihar, studied mechanical engineering from the Government Engineering College, Gorakhpur. In the year 1978, he started his business in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh with just Rs 2,000. Gradually he established the country’s largest chit fund business and Sahara empire. He reached Lucknow from Gorakhpur. He collected lakhs of rupees from people living below the poverty line in his chit fund scheme. These were those people who did not have much knowledge about banking. Subrata Roy promised to return this money with manifold profits in a stipulated time frame.

When SEBI investigated in 2010, I was shocked.

Market regulator Securities and Exchange Bureau of India (SEBI) investigated Subrata Roy in 2010. He was found to have collected more than Rs 24,000 crore from three crore people.

The largest employer after Indian Railways

The empire of Subrata Roy’s Sahara Group can be gauged from the fact that in the year 2004, ‘Time Magazine described him as the largest employer after Indian Railways. The business of Subrata Roy, who was close to former UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, touched the sky in the 1990s. It was so much so that when he got his son married in 2004, even people like Amitabh Bachchan were included in the wedding procession.
