‘The Idea of You’ Movie Review
Director Michael Showalter takes a step-by-step look at the rise and fall of the forbidden love between a 40-year-old woman and a 24-year-old young rock star. In this process, the first part of the film progresses at a slow pace. The second half of the film is stronger than the first half. Despite the passionate manner in which the director depicts the physical attraction between the two, the emotional aspect of the two is not as strong, yet the story keeps you engaged.
It would have been good if the director had given more importance to the daughter’s track in the film. The good thing about the story is that it talks about the physical and emotional needs of a single woman surrounded by responsibilities in middle age. The climax of the film seems to have been done in a hurry. Despite this, the ending seems like a happy fairy tale. Jim Frona’s cinematography flourishes in the romantic scenes. If Siddharth Khosla had added something more to the music in the form of boy band songs, it would have been fun.
Anne Hathaway leads the way in acting. She has beautifully lived the character of a single mother as well as a woman oscillating between her desires and aspirations. Her beauty and simplicity make the viewer believe why a 24 year old famous rock star can fall in love with her. At the same time, Nicholas Galitzine has given him good support as Hayes. The chemistry of both looks attractive on screen. Ella Rubin has done a strong job in the role of the daughter. The scenes between mother and daughter are lovely. The supporting cast is decent.
Why watch – Those who are fond of romantic films and want to see something different can watch this film.
